FILTRATION
Filtration is accomplished by forcing liquid under pressure through a cloth or screen (septum). The solids to be filtered may be non-rigid, slimy or colloidal in size and occur in most organic and food products.
Why Use Celatom Filter Powder
Theoretically, the liquid should pass through the opening of the filter cloth and the impurities remain on the cloth. In practice, the finer, suspended solids pass through the coarse openings in the cloth and larger particles remain behind to clog the openings, smear the cloth and slow down or, most likely, stop the flow.
In such systems where the filtration resistance is high, unwanted solids can only be removed efficiently and economically by use of filter powder. The filter powder forms a porous layer on the filter septum, which acts principally as a support for this cake or bed. The filter aid is also added into the unfiltered liquid as a body aid; it is the filter aid that traps the solids and prevents them from blinding the septum.
Use of filter aid also allows quick and easy cake removal without damage to the cloth.

Lab Scale And Full Scale Trials for Filtration
Our engineers attend customers’ sites with our lab-scale filtration equipment to quickly assess the solids/liquid separation needs. Our equipment is independent and does not require connection to your process, ensuring there is no interruption to your production. These laboratory trials produce scale-up data which correlates closely with results obtained in plant production. Our key target is to maximise filtration efficiency and minimise filter powder usage.
Filtration variables typically are:
1. Optimum type and grade of filter aid for pre-coat and body feed
2. Optimum rates for pre-coats and body feed
3. Optimising throughputs/filtration cycle lengths
4. Optimising filtrates clarity/solids loading of filtrate post filtration
5. Assess losses/savings within the filtration department, eg. minimise the spent filter powder and the valuable product trapped within the cake ending up in landfill
Advice on cost cutting measures. For example, on rotary vacuum filtration systems, optimising the filter powder selection can reduce the depth of cake cut per revolution by the advancing knife. This will result in longer filter runs, reduce losses of valuable liquid from your process and lower filter aid usage.
Continuous Monitoring. Our engineers keep in regular contact with our customers to monitor upstream changes in the unfiltered liquid, adapting the filter powder regime as required to ensure filtration remains at optimum clarity and throughput.
New Installations. We can run lab-scale trials test to help in the plant design process, then assist again at plant start-up. This service is also offered for existing installations to ensure optimum regimes are utilised.
Training. We are extremely happy to attend your site to consult on the existing filtration system and advise on “filtration best practice”, this often includes filtration operator training.
